As mighty as God is, He cannot do for you what you don’t want for yourself. I still remember the disbelief on my face the first time I heard someone say something similar to the statement I just made. It must have been at least 15 years ago when I was beginning my walk with the Lord. It sounded like heresy to me and for the weeks that followed, I perused over that and could not bring myself to accept that as truth. Is He not Almighty? Does He not know what is best for me? If He does and would not do it for me then is He indeed God?
Then as the years went by the truth of that statement began dawning on me as I realized the necessity for my desires and wishes to align with His. My understanding of verses like Psalm 37:4 began to change as I began to see that when I truly delight myself in the Lord, my desires start to change more and more to become His desires for me. It was then that I saw the importance of acquainting myself with what the Lord’s will for humanity is. That is the reason why we study scripture; in order to become more and more like Him in order that we can want what He wants much more than we want what we want. To decrease while He increases, to paraphrase the words of John the Baptist.
Still there is a great danger that lies in the fact that we may not be able to believe certain things that He says about us and actually desires for us either because we have gotten too used to certain situations or we have learnt to manage circumstances in our lives on our own. While it almost sounds unbelievable to even think about it, I have recently encountered certain situations which I found hard to wrap my mind around. I almost wish that God would just force Himself on me sometimes and give me what He knows is good for me even if I don’t get it. But then I realize that were He to do that, He will rob both of us the joy of willingly yielding to His will. Charles Kraft put it this way “God cannot be limited by anything outside of Himself. In this sense He is omnipotent. However, He can limit Himself. And He has chosen to limit Himself by giving humans free will.”
Regardless of what His will for is, it can only come to pass if you agree with Him. It is how He has chosen to work in this physical realm. So if you are one amongst the many who takes for granted the prayer “Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven,” please wake up to the occasion and realize the truth that God desires to partner with you concerning your life but also concerning the accomplishment of His purposes on earth. In Ezekiel He laments the fact that He was not able to find one man who would stand in the gap and intercede on behalf of the nations. Now lest you get me wrong, I am not saying that the accomplishment of God’s will is dependent on you for if you decide to do nothing about it, deliverance will come from another. Mordecai was walking in this same revelation when he exhorted Esther to take her place and walk courageously before the King in search for the deliverance of the Jews.
“Remember this, keep it in mind,
take it to heart, you rebels.
Remember the former things, those of long ago;
I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me.
I make known the end from the beginning,
from ancient times, what is still to come.
I say, ‘My purpose will stand,
and I will do all that I please.'”
(Isaiah 46:8-10)
Now the question remains, “What are you going to do about this? Will you partner with Him or not?”
Only you can answer for you!!!
